The foundation of Ayurveda in Kerala is a classical text ‘Ashtangahridaya‘ by Vagbhata. It is believed that a few Nampoothiri ( Brahmin) families were the original Ayurvedic physicians and their descendants still carry the honorific title of ‘ashtavaidyam‘. Today this holistic science of healing is practiced throughout India. However the Kerala method is famous for its five-pronged treatment, ‘panchakarma’, in which medicated oils, herbs, milk , massage and a special diet are used to cure all types of ailments.
Ayurveda also focuses on exercise, yoga, and meditation. To maintain health, a Sattvic diet can be prescribed to the patient.
Concepts of Dinacharya are followed in Ayurveda; dinacharya stresses the importance of natural cycles (waking, sleeping, working, meditation etc.) for a healthy living. Hygiene, too, is a central practice of Ayurvedic medicine. Hygienic living involves regular bathing, cleansing of teeth, skin care, and eye washing.
Ayurveda stresses the use of plant-based medicines and treatments.
